Dongguan ZSR Biomedical Secures EU Trademark Registration for “Fishtail” Anti-Reflux Ureteral Stent
A distinctive distal-end design developed to address vesicoureteral reflux and improve the patient experience during ureteral stenting.
Dongguan, China — Dongguan ZSR Biomedical Technology Company Limited is pleased to announce that “Fishtail” has been officially registered as a trademark in the European Union for its anti-reflux ureteral stent.
The registration represents another important milestone in ZSR Biomedical’s commitment to developing differentiated urological solutions that address both clinical performance and patient experience.
Why Anti-Reflux Design Matters
Double-J ureteral stents are widely used to maintain urinary drainage following ureteroscopic stone treatment and in patients with upper urinary tract obstruction. However, conventional stents may allow urine to flow backward from the bladder toward the kidney during voiding—a phenomenon known as vesicoureteral reflux (VUR).
This reflux may contribute to flank or lower-back discomfort, particularly during urination, as well as lower urinary tract symptoms and an overall reduction in quality of life while the stent remains in place.
ZSR’s Fishtail Double-J Stent incorporates a distinctive fishtail-shaped bladder end. The configuration is designed to help limit retrograde urine flow while maintaining the drainage and ureteral-support functions expected from an indwelling ureteral stent.
A Design Focused on Patient Comfort
- -Designed to help limit retrograde urine flow from the bladder toward the upper urinary tract
- - Intended to help address reflux-related discomfort that may occur during urination
- - A distinctive bladder-end configuration designed to reduce unnecessary contact within the bladder
- - Designed to maintain antegrade urinary drainage and ureteral support
- - Developed with the aim of improving the overall stent-indwelling experience
Growing Clinical Interest in Anti-Reflux Ureteral Stents
The potential value of anti-reflux ureteral stents is increasingly supported by clinical research.
A prospective randomized study published in Scientific Reports in 2026 compared anti-reflux ureteral stents with conventional Double-J stents in male patients following ureteroscopic lithotripsy. Among the 96 patients who completed the study, the anti-reflux group demonstrated better outcomes in postoperative inflammatory markers, lower-back pain and lower urinary tract symptoms. The researchers also reported lower anxiety scores during part of the follow-up period and better erectile-function scores at weeks 2, 4 and 6.
The authors concluded that anti-reflux stents may help reduce stent-related discomfort and protect patients’ quality of life and sexual function. They also emphasized that larger, multicentre randomized studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Research note: This independent study evaluated a different anti-reflux ureteral stent and did not evaluate ZSR’s Fishtail Double-J Stent. The findings are presented solely to explain the broader clinical rationale for developing ureteral stents intended to control vesicoureteral reflux. Product-specific clinical outcomes should not be inferred from this study.
More Than a Trademark
The EU trademark registration protects the distinctive Fishtail identity and reinforces ZSR Biomedical’s long-term strategy of building internationally recognized proprietary products in endourology.
For ZSR, Fishtail is more than a product name. It represents a patient-centred approach to ureteral stent design—moving beyond basic drainage and support to consider how the stent may affect comfort and quality of life throughout the indwelling period.
